Dreams and Your Health

"I dream of being on a hillside and seeing a little white bungalow. As I look at the house, it explodes. I know my sister is inside, yet I do nothing to rescue her. I feel very detached from what is going on and I don't even try to move toward the house to rescue her."

Although the 36-year-old woman who had this dream knew nothing about dream interpretation, she had an overwhelming sense that there was an important message trying to come through to her.

If we define health in terms of wellness on all levels of our being (spiritual, emotional, mental and physical) then it will be easy to see that this woman's dreams, and indeed all dreams, are a rich source of advice about health and how we can restore a state of equilibrium. Below we will interpret this dream and define how it has impacted this woman's health and well being for years.

Your nightly dreams are a rich source of guidance, wisdom and knowledge, and this dreamer was able to comprehend the meaning of the above dream by being asked a few simple questions. You too can ask yourself some simple questions about your dreams and begin to glimpse some of the powerful messages being delivered to you in your nightly picture show.

The first step is identifying the outstanding symbol in the dream. That is an object, person or animal that stood out the most or felt the most important. In this dream example, the dreamer identified the sister as being the most outstanding symbol. Next she was asked about the meaning of the symbol. You don't need a dream interpretation book to answer this question. Simply describe the object, animal or person in as much detail as possible. Define the outstanding symbol as if you were describing it to a foreigner or alien. Write your answers down to tap into an even deeper (unconscious) answer.

When asked about the meaning of the symbol sister, the dreamer explained the following: "The sister I am referring to in the dream is my real sister, but she died many years ago. We were walking home from school one day, she was 13 and I was 16, and she ran out ahead of me and got hit by a car and died. My life changed very dramatically when she died because my parents held me responsible for her death and I have carried this burden for 20 years".

The second step in this mini-interpretation process is to identify the outstanding feeling in the dream. In this case the dreamer identified the feeling to be detachment.

The third question or step in this process is to ask yourself if you can relate the feelings from the dream, and the information from the outstanding symbol, to a recent waking-hour event. In this example, when asked if she could relate the feelings of detachment to her last few days of waking-hour events, she explained. "In the last several days I have been very disconnected from the explosive feelings going on inside of me even though I have been aware of them. I now realize I have done nothing about them (the feelings) and I have felt like I was going to explode lately. Recently many things have triggered memories of my sister and I now see how the dream was trying to get me to connect my long buried feelings about my sister, her death, the resulting burden of responsibility, and feelings of guilt, into my everyday conscious awareness."

The proverbial light-bulb went on for this dreamer as she realized "Up until just now, I never realized how much of an impact her death has had on this overwhelming sense of burden I have carried with me for so long. I just never connected all these feelings to my sisters death and what a relief it is to make this connection and know I don't have to keep stuffing these feelings down".

This single dream had the power to release the dreamer from holding onto and holding in intense feelings. When not released, held in feelings can cause congestion within the chakra system and subtle bodies. This can further lead to a multitude of health problems and illnesses in the physical body. Dreams always reveal your true feelings, even if they are unrecognized or un-owned by the dreamer. In this way dreams are a pivotal part of one's healing process and spiritual journey.

Similarly, dreams also reveal ones true mental state of being. That is to say, dreams expose the truth of your beliefs, attitudes and opinions. In order to heal dis-ease that has manifested on the physical level, one must become aware of the underlying emotional and mental components that contribute to the illness. This makes the dreamtime information an invaluable tool for anyone aspiring to heal into wholeness.

Remember dreams are free material presented to you every night. It is well worth the few minutes it takes to jot down a dream, the outstanding symbol and the feeling, in order to maintain your well-being and health.
